Do we have favorite children? The child that behaves, the child that makes you smile? We love them all but, sometimes one tree shines and stirs your heart and becomes a favorite, at least for a moment
My favorite for bark color has been A.p. Japanese Sunrise for quite some time. The transitions of color from yellow in the fall to orange with hot pink tips in the depth the winter and slowly receding back through the spring to green in the summer. Glorious.
A.p. Shin deshojo is certainly a favorite for many reasons. Brilliant bright red color in early is outstanding. The fact that the tree is durable in the hottest climates and a vigorous grower make it the first recommendation for many applications. Everyone does well with Shin deshojo.
A.p. Mikawa yatsubusa is by far my favorite of the dwarf trees. Extraordinary structure creates the impression of a Bonsai with no pruning needed. Wonderful chartreuse green in the spring and bright red in the fall. Easy to grow with excellent heat tolerance. A statement in the garden year round.
I will always be amazed by the first emergence of the pale green leaves from the red leaf sheaths. The cool pale green of A.p. Shigitatsu sawa is so refreshing all summer long. I love the intricate detail of the reticulated variegation and the perfect small upright form. Light and bright in a shady spot. A favorite for many years.
I am constantly amazed at the diversity of the maples. Do you have a favorite? I would love to hear from you!
